In an attempt to keep costs affordable, Thrift
Internet Service does not offer proprietary newsgroup service. However, if you need newsgroup
service there is no reason to go without it. We offer two
suggestions for news service:
1. Use
news.individual.net. This is a free newsgroup service that
supports both newsgroup reading and posting. This service is
sponsored by Freie Universität
Berlin, a German university. You can use this service with any
popular newsgroup software that supports authentication, including
Outlook Express. The newsgroup listing is very comprehensive, with
a well-maintained list of over 24,000 groups. If you wish to view
the current listing of available newsgroups, click the link below:

Use of this service requires registration, but registration is
free and everyone is welcome to join. It usually takes 12 to 24
hours for the registration process to complete. You may request account
registration by email. Simply email your
name (first & last) and email address to
news-register@individual.net by clicking the link below:

If everything went fine with your request email
you should receive a confirmation email immediately. Your account
information will be emailed to you within 24 hours, including a
link to detailed instructions for configuring your newsgroup
software.
This is a great service and posting propagation
is very nearly immediate.
2. Use
Google Groups. Google offers a
free online newsgroup service with posting privileges. You can
access Google Groups at the following link:

Groups
Google Groups is not nearly as good of a
solution as news.individual.net. Newsgroup articles and posting are
normally delayed for 3 to 6 hours at Google, where
news.individual.net articles and posting are very nearly real-time.
Also, Google does not organize articles conveniently into threads
the way Outlook Express does.
It is still important to acknowledge the
existence of Google Groups. If you have no other way to read and
post, Google Groups is always available.
